Dear Community,
It is truly an honor to serve as the Executive Director of NMCIR. My connection to this work is deeply personal. In 1960, my grandmother fled Cuba with her family, seeking safety in the U.S. Like many immigrants, she faced immense challenges adjusting to a new life. Tragically, she took her own life, a loss that continues to resonate with me. Her story fuels my commitment to ensuring that no immigrant faces their struggles alone.
At NMCIR, we are dedicated to more than just survival. We strive to uplift immigrants, empowering them with the resources they need to thrive and contribute to the vibrant fabric of New York City. Immigrants are not defined by their hardships, but by their resilience and the profound contributions they make to our economy, culture, and communities.
Since the start of this year, we have supported over 300 asylum seekers, including 100 shelter residents. We’ve helped families from countries like Venezuela, where political violence forced them to flee, and individuals like a woman from Ecuador who arrived in New York with nothing. Each person’s story reminds us of the importance of the work we do—not just providing legal aid or shelter but restoring dignity and hope.
In addition to legal services, we are proud to offer workforce training, domestic violence advocacy, citizenship support, and, most recently, expanded adult literacy programs with the hiring of our first-ever full-time Adult Literacy Manager. These programs provide immigrants with the skills and opportunities they need to build stable futures and contribute to the local economy.
As we look to the future, we are committed to ensuring that every immigrant who comes through our doors receives the support they need—not only to survive but to thrive as part of New York’s diverse and thriving community. The stakes have never been higher, but together, with your support, we can make a difference.
I want to thank all our partners and supporters for their ongoing commitment. This work would not be possible without the collective effort of our community, and I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you.
In solidarity,

Christine L. Mendoza
